I have the honour to acknowledge Your Excel-

-lency's letter of the "th. instant, on the subject of the

delay of the Chamber of Commerce in replying to Your Excellencyś communication on the subject of the proposed extension of the Long Vacation.

I must confess to have been exceedingly vexed by the delay, which was occasioned merely by Mr. Hewett's absence from the Colony. I think Your Excellency will agree with me that this hardly justified the delay. I understand however that there has been, or that there shortly will be a meeting of the Chamber.

am keenly alive to the importance of such bodies as the Chamber of Commerce, and I am always anxious to maintain their position. The Law Society seens to me to stand in a similar position. It was for that reason that I somewhat resented the support which Mr. Hewett seemed inclined to give to the views of the minority, who, on general principles I consider should be bound by the opinion of the Elected Committee of their own self-constituted body.

4.

One of the junior members of the profession

has been to see me, and has explained certain objections which the smaller firms of solicitors have to the proposed change. It is probable that these objections will be removed on further discussion.
